Women in the Military

Women have served in the American military and fought in combat since the Revolutionary War, but most military women have served as nurses and done clerical tasks. Women, however, have challenged the limitations placed on women’s service, especially in the late twentieth century and the early twenty-first century. In January 2013, restrictions were lifted regarding women fighting on the front lines of combat, not without controversy. Another controversial issue is the military’s inability to devise policies that reduce the sexual harassment and the sexual assaults on female military personnel.
