Phillips v. Martin Marietta Corporation (1971)

Phillips v. Martin Marietta Corporation was the first case to reach the U.S. Supreme Court that dealt with gender discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In the case, Ida Phillips, a mother with two young children, applied for an assembly trainee position with Martin Marietta, but the company’s hiring policy excluded mothers with preschool children. The company, however, did hire men with pre-school children. The Court decided that the company’s policy discriminated against women based on Title VII.
