Musgrave, Marilyn N. (b. 1949)

Republican Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2003 to January 3, 2009. During her first term in office, Congresswoman Musgrave founded the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus. She proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as the union of one woman and one man, an idea that gained additional support when President George W. Bush endorsed it. She opposed allowing the courts to define marriage. She led the fight against an eight-cent-per-gallon increase in the federal gasoline tax, which Republican leaders sought. When she subsequently requested additional money for projects in her district, leaders refused because she had not supported the gasoline tax increase, but she enlisted the help of other Republicans and succeeded. Her other priorities included cutting taxes, promoting fiscal discipline, improving education, and supporting agriculture. Musgrave was defeated in her attempt for a fourth term by Democrat Betsy Markey.

A member of the Fort Morgan, Colorado school board from 1990 to 1994, Musgrave advocated increased academic rigor and discipline for students. She served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1994 to 1998, and in the Colorado Senate from 1998 to 2002.

Born in Greeley, Colorado, Musgrave earned a BA at Colorado State University in 1972.
