Martz, Judy (b. 1943)

Governor of Montana from 2001 to 2005, Republican Judy Martz was the state’s first woman to hold the office. Martz served as lieutenant governor from 1997 to 2001. During her term as governor, Martz hosted three summits on health care and one on reducing the production, distribution, and use of methamphetamine. She also appointed commissions to study taxes, school funding, and health care. Her term in office was marred by ethics questions, which were investigated and dismissed. Martz did not seek re-election in 2004.

Born in Big Timber, Montana, Martz was a speed skater on the 1964 U.S. Olympic team.
