Martinez, Susana (b. 1959)

Republican Susana Martinez was governor of New Mexico from 2011 to 2019. Martinez is the first Hispanic woman to serve as governor of any state.

Martinez brought more women and minorities into New Mexico’s government than previous administrations, with the state ranking sixth in the nation.

She based her campaign on ending corruption in state government and responding to problems that had plagued the incumbent administration, including investigations and convictions. She gained support from Republican party leaders who saw an advantage in having a Hispanic woman in their ranks. In addition, she obtained an endorsement from Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska and former Republican nominee for vice president.
