Lummis, Cynthia (b. 1954)

Republican Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2017. She advocated “fiscal responsibility, limiting the size and scope of the federal government, and developing our nation’s domestic energy capabilities.”

She introduced a bill to investigate the possibility of adding the Heart Mountain Relocation Center—a place of Japanese internment during World War II—to the National Park Service. The measure passed and the Center is now part of the NPS. She also sponsored the National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act, which became law in 2016.

She decided against running for another term and was succeeded by Liz Cheney.

Lummis served in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1993, and in the Wyoming Senate from 1993 to 1995. While in the legislature, she focused on natural resources and taxation issues. She was acting director of Wyoming State Lands and Investment from 1997 to 1998 and Wyoming state treasurer from 1999 to 2007.

Congresswoman Lummis earned her BS in 1976, a second BS in 1978, and her JD in 1985, all from the University of Wyoming.
