Jayapal, Pramila (b. 1965)

Democrat Pramila Jayapal of Washington entered the U.S. House of Representatives on January 3, 2017. She is the first South Asian woman elected to Congress. Described as “an outspoken progressive who sees herself as a catalyst for making Congress more accountable to those disenchanted with politics and government.” Jayapal explained: “Too many people feel like the economy is rigged against them” Her priorities include raising the federal minimum wage, changing the prison-industrial complex that keeps people in jail, and increasing Social Security and Medicare benefits.

She served in the Washington State Senate from 2015 to 2016.

Born in India, Congresswoman Jayapal earned her AB degree at Georgetown University in 1986 and her MBA degree at Northwestern University in 1990.
