Ivey, Kay (b. 1944)

Republican Kay Ivey became the 54th governor of Alabama on April 10, 2017. She ascended to the governor’s office following the resignation of the incumbent following an ethics violation. She won a full term in the 2018 election.

In 2019 Ivey signed the most restrictive abortion bill in the nation, gaining national attention for her and her state.

Ivey was lieutenant governor from 2011 until becoming governor. Before that, she was state treasurer from 2003 to 2007.

Raised in Camden, Alabama, Ivey earned her bachelor’s degree at Auburn University in 1967.
