González-Colón, Jenniffer (b. 1976)

New Progressive Jenniffer González-Colón of Puerto Rico entered the U.S. House of Representatives on January 3, 2017 to a four-year term. She holds the office of Resident Commissioner, the title for Puerto Rico’s sole representative to Congress. She is the first woman to hold the office.

Her priorities in Congress have been Puerto Rico’s economic recovery following devastating hurricanes and obtaining equal treatment for Puerto Rico under the United States’ laws, policies, and services. She has long been an activist for Puerto Rican statehood.

González-Colón served in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives from 2002 to 2016, serving as speaker from 2009 to 2012 and minority leader from 2013 to 2016. She has chaired the Puerto Rico Republican Party since 2015 and has been vice-president of New Progressives since 2008.

González-Colón earned her BA degree at University of Puerto Rico, her JD degree and her LLM degree at Inter American University of Puerto Rico.
