Giffords, Gabrielle (b. 1970)

Democrat Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2007 to January 25, 2012. Congresswoman Giffords resigned following an assassination attempt on January 8, 2011, that left six people dead and 13 others wounded, including Giffords, who was shot in the head. In a letter read by her friend, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), she told House members at the time of her resignation, “I have more work to do on my recovery before I can again serve in elected office.” According to The New York Times, “The send off for Ms. Giffords brought Democrats and Republicans together like no other event in the last year.”

At the time of the shooting, she was meeting constituents in what she called Congress on Your Corner, an open-air event in a parking lot. After struggling for her life, she spent months in hospitals and rehabilitation.

As she recovered, Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly began their campaign to end gun violence in the United States; they titled their organization Giffords.

Prior to serving in Congress, Giffords served in the Arizona House from 2001 to 2003 and in the Arizona Senate from 2003 to 2005.

Giffords earned her BA from Scripps College in 1993 and her master’s in regional planning from Cornell University in 1997.
