Fulani, Lenora Branch (b. ca. 1950)

The first African American and the first woman presidential candidate whose name appeared on the ballots in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Lenora Fulani ran on the New Alliance Party ticket in 1988. That year, she qualified for federal matching funds of $905,000. She received 240,000 votes, a considerable number for a third-party candidate. When she ran on the ticket in 1992, she received about $1.45 million in federal matching funds, was on the ballot in 45 states, and received 217,000 votes.

Fulani unsuccessfully ran for New York lieutenant governor in 1984 on the New Alliance Party ticket, for mayor of New York City in 1985, and for governor of New York in 1986. Fulani ran in the 1994 New York Democratic primary; she lost, but received 142,000 votes, about 21 percent of those cast. She ran again for lieutenant governor of New York in 1998.

Fulani joined the New Alliance Party in 1980. She described it as “a black-led, multiracial, progressive, third party.”

Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, Fulani graduated from Hofstra University in 1971 and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University Teachers College in 1972.
