Ellmers, Renee (b. 1964)

Republican Renee Ellmers of North Carolina served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2011 to January 3, 2017. A self-described “Tea Party conservative,” Ellmers signed the Contract with America, a 10-point pledge of conservative priorities. When Ellmers’s congressional representative voted for the Affordable Care Act, Ellmers decided to run against him. During the general election campaign, Ellmers ran against President Barack Obama’s health care reforms, as well as his larger agenda. She explained: “I’m running for Congress because I’m a mom and I’m very afraid of where our country is going and where the current administration in Washington is taking us.” As a member of Congress, she worked to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

A court decision redrew Ellmers’s congressional district, leaving her with as little as 15 percent of her previous constituents. She lost in the 2016 primary.

Ellmers earned her BS at Oakland University in 1990. She is a surgical intensive care nurse.
