From Suffrage to the Senate America's Political Women: An Encyclopedia of Leaders, Causes & Issues

Edwards, Elaine Lucille Schwartzenburg (1929-2018)

Democrat Elaine Edwards of Louisiana served in the U.S. Senate from August 1, 1972 to November 13, 1972. When the death of one of Louisiana’s senators created a vacancy, Governor Edwin Edwards appointed his wife Elaine Edwards to fill it. She made it clear that she would not run for a full term when she accepted the appointment.

She did, however, take “pride in securing federal funding for highways in Louisiana, including a 70/30 federally financed toll road.” She explained “My proudest moment was convincing members of the Public Works Committee to vote funds for a north–south highway to connect the two east–west interstates in Louisiana.” She continued: “Now the prospects are very real that we can lure much–needed industry to the central part of the state.”

Elaine Edwards was born in Marksville, Louisiana.
