From Suffrage to the Senate America's Political Women: An Encyclopedia of Leaders, Causes & Issues

Andrews, (Leslie) Elizabeth Bullock (1911-2002)

Democrat Elizabeth Andrews of Alabama served in the U.S. House of Representatives from April 4, 1972 to January 3, 1973. Andrews first entered politics in 1944, when her husband George Andrews ran for Congress while serving in the Navy. She campaigned as his surrogate. Following Congressman George Andrews’s death, the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee selected Elizabeth Andrews to be the party’s nominee to fill the vacancy. She did not have a Republican opponent in the special election. During her nine months in office, she introduced amendments to protect medical and Social Security benefits and cosponsored a bill to make Tuskegee Institute a national historical park. She did not run for a full term in 1972.

Born in Geneva, Alabama, Andrews earned her BA at Montevallo College in 1932 and then taught home economics.
