The Americas: Sixteenth Century European Settlements

A map showing North, Central, and South America and the West Indies in the sixteenth century. The Aztec and Inca empires are dotted with Spanish settlements, including Mexico City, Campeche, Lima, La Paz, and Buenos Aires. The Portugese colonized the east coast of what is now Brazil, with settlements in São Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Natal. The perforated vertical line demarcates the division of Spanish and Portugese territories drawn by the Treaty of Tordesillas.
