Great Lives from History: Renaissance & Early Modern Era, 1454-1600

Rulers and Heads of State

Major world leaders are listed below, beginning with the Roman Catholic popes and followed by leaders of major nations or dynasties, alphabetically by country. Within each country section, leaders are listed chronologically. It is important to note that name spellings and regnal dates vary among sources, and that variations do not necessarily suggest inaccuracy. For example, dates when leaders took power may not match dates of coronation, and the names by which leaders have been recorded in history may represent birth names, epithets, or regnal names. Date ranges and geographical borders of nations and dynasties vary, given the complexities of politics and warfare, and that “nations” evolved over time from competing and allied principalities. Hence, not every civilization, dynasty, principality, or region can be covered here; we have, however, attempted to provide lists of leaders for those countries most likely to be addressed in general history and area studies courses.

Asterisked (*) names indicate popes who have been sainted by the Church. Names appearing in square brackets [ ] are antipopes.

Maya Kings of Tikal

The Maya, who occupied the region of Central America from the Yucatán to Guatemala, maintained several centers in the region, but one, Tikal, recorded in Mayan glyphs a line of kings for nearly eight hundred years, roughly corresponding to the Classic Period now considered by scholars to be the height of Mayan civilization. The list below is from Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens, by Simon Martin and Nikolai Grube (New York: Thames and Hudson, 2000).

Frankish Kingdom and France

The Merovingians and Carolingians ruled different parts of the Frankish kingdom, which accounts for overlapping regnal dates in these tables. The term “emperor” refers to rule over what eventually came to be known as the Holy Roman Empire.

Germanic Tribes

See also Holy Roman Empire

In the fifth and sixth centuries, Europe was invaded from the east by several “barbarian” tribes from eastern Europe and Central Asia, including the Visigoths, who inflicted the earliest damage on Rome in the late fourth and early fifth centuries; the Burgundians, from central and northeastern Europe; the Vandals, who eventually settled in Spain and North Africa; the Suevi, who made their way to the north of Spain and finally fell to the Visigoths; the Alans, a non-Germanic steppe tribe from Iran who, along with the Suevi and the Visigoths, overran Gaul (France) and the Iberian Peninsula; and the Franks (see Frankish Kingdom and France, above), who occupied most of Gaul during the later Roman Empire and were the only of these early tribes to survive. The Franks would evolve into the Merovingian and Carolingian lines, and by the ninth century they dominated Europe. Below is a list of some of the Germanic tribes and tribal leaders before and during the Frankish period. The region known today as Germany was initially occupied by these tribes and then came under the subjugation of the Frankish Merovingians and Carolingians. In 962, the Holy Roman Empire came into existence and held sway over Germany for nearly a millennium (see Holy Roman Empire, below). Not until the late nineteenth century did the nation-state of Germany come into existence.

Holy Roman Empire

Although some sources consider the Holy Roman Empire to have begun with Otto I’s coronation in 962, others date the Empire’s beginning as early as Charlemagne’s consolidation of the Franks and his coronation as emperor of the Frankish Empire in 800. The term “Sacrum Romanum Imperium” (Holy Roman Empire) dates to 1254, the use of the term “Holy Empire” to 1157, and the term “Roman Empire” to 1034 (reign of Conrad II). “Roman emperor” was applied to Otto I during his reign; however, Charlemagne also used the term to refer to his own reign. The concept of a “Holy” Roman Empire goes back to the beginning of the Byzantine Empire and the reign of the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine the Great. Hence, the concept of this political entity can be considered to have evolved incrementally over time. The practice of papal coronation to legitimate the emperor began with Otto I. Regnal dates are therefore often listed as beginning with the date of coronation. However, the German kings who became Holy Roman Emperors frequently asserted their de facto power earlier as rulers of West Frankia (France), East Frankia (essentially Germany), and/or Italy (roughly the northern portion of modern Italy). In the table below, where a date of ascension to the West Frankish (French), East Frankish (German), Middle Frankish (Lorraine south to Italy), or other throne is different from that to Emperor, the former date is set before a slash and the date of assuming the rule of the Empire falls after the slash. Asterisks indicate that the monarch was not formally crowned at Rome by the pope, a practice that officially ended with Frederick II, although Charles V was last to be crowned outside Rome.

Italy

The Italian peninsula was occupied by a number of fiefs and principalities during the better part of the millennium that made up the Middle Ages. These included Lombardy in the north, the Papal States in the center, and various duchies, margavates, and republics, including Sardinia, Benevento, Spoleto, Modena, Milan, Tuscany, Parma, Montferrat, and independent centers of trade such as Venice and Genoa. Only those early rulers who dominated the area are listed below; thereafter, the northern part of the peninsula was primarily under the power of the Carolingians (see Frankish Kingdom and France), the Holy Roman Emperors (see Holy Roman Empire, above), and the Papacy (see Popes and Antipopes, above). In the south, Naples and Sicily dominated. Thus, during the millennium 476-1453, the Italian Peninsula was a complex of ever-shifting jurisdictions, of which only the more prominent rulers are listed below.

Mongols

From his base in Mongolia, founder Genghis Khan conquered a large and diverse region covering much of Asia from the Far East to the steppes of Russia, Turkey and the Middle East, Central Asia, and even parts of Southeast Asia. Although the individual leaders of those who inherited this empire remain unfamiliar to most, Genghis’s heirs, among whom are the “great khans” of the immediate generations to follow, would indelibly change and shape the world from Russia to China, the Mideast to India. Genghis divided his empire among four sons. Jochi, the eldest, received the northwestern quadrant of this expanse, and his sons would found the “hordes” (armies) the would become known as the Blue, White, and eventually Golden Hordes; the latter would not meet its match until Russia’s founder, Ivan the Great, refused to pay tribute in 1476 and thereafter would dissolve into the various khanates of Kazan, Astrakhan, and the Crimea. Genghis’s second son, Chaghatai, would receive the area of Central Asia lying north of India and east of the Caspian and Aral seas, sometimes called Moghulistan or Mughulistan. Genghis’s third son, Ogatai, oversaw the southeastern and far east coastal “quadrant” or swathe, which would eventually become part of the huge realm of his nephew Kublai Khan, who in turn was the son of Genghis’s youngest, Tolui, heir to the Mongolian homeland. It was Tolui’s sons, beginning with Kublai, who would spawn the Chinese emperors of the Yuan Dynasty in the east and, beginning with Hulegu, the great Ilkhans who conquered the Middle East. The Ilkhans’ successors, the Jalāyirids, Black Sheep Turks, White Sheep Turks, and ultimately the Timurids (founded by the part-Mongol Timur or Tamerlane), would dominate the Mideast and also give rise to the Mughal Dynasty in India.

Spain

The Iberian Peninsula now occupied by Spain and Portugal was a turbulent region during the Middle Ages, a place where numerous cultures clashed, notably Christianity and Islam but also a broad and ethnically diverse group of peoples, from the Suevi and Visigoths of the seventh century through the Berbers and Islamic peoples in the south. Through most of the Middle Ages the region saw a succession of fluctuating principalities in the north primarily Asturias, Galicia, Aragón, Navarre, León, and Castile, while in the south Islam held sway from the eighth century to the time of Columbus’s voyage to the Americas in 1492. In that year the Reconquista concluded with the Fall of Granada, and Christianity claimed the peninsula. In 1516, the Kingdom of Spain united all former kingdoms, with the exception of Portugal, into one Kingdom of Spain.
