Critical Survey of Shakespeare: Film Adaptations

Publisher’s Note

Critical Survey of Shakespeare: Film Adaptations offers readers an entry point into the critical analysis of the most prominent film versions of Shakespeare’s plays. These cinema and television productions, increasingly used as a teaching tool in high schools and colleges, have sought to bring Shakespeare’s works to modern audiences in a new way. Whether created as a stand-alone film or as a recorded version of a stage production, the different approaches to each adaptation raise intriguing questions and encourage a fresh and contemporary understanding of these traditional plays. Nearly all of the productions discussed in this volume are readily available to students and general viewers.

Each play entry begins with a cast of characters, a plot summary, and a brief literary analysis. Film adaptations follow in chronological order. A brief bibliography concludes each write-up. A separate segment on notable and influential series and foreign-language films appears after the play section.

Resources include a Chronology of Shakespeare’s Life; Works by William Shakespeare; Selected Film Adaptations; a general Bibliography; and an Index.
